As the sun rises, the young girl is woken by an older woman shaking her saying, “Wake up Scarlet, wake up”.
“I'm awake, I'm awake. What is it?” she asks, pulling the sheet up to her chin.
“There where wolves here last night", the woman replies, "They were looking for food".

“Oh, does that mean I can't go collecting in the forest tonight?", panic was setting in.
“You still must go Scarlet, but you will need to work quickly and take a bow with you so you can defend yourself ” Nodding, the girl slips from the bed. When the woman leaves, she quickly runs to get everything ready so she can see the wolves. Scarlet packs her only spare set of clothes, her water bladder, and what food she has concealed over the past few days. Pangs of hunger set in "You must wait", she reminds herself silently. Her worldly possessions she pushes into her day pack; two luck stones, five magic oak twigs, a book about herbs, things to eat and avoid and a map.
She slips outside, to see the stable hand. At the stables, she gathers up a bow and twenty arrows, a hunting knife and flint. The stable hand approaches with a bundle of bedding for her. "Mind yer don't get your bedroll wet Miss, or it will be a soggy night's sleep for yer" She thanks the old man with a nod and hurries out of the stable, before she is spotted by anybody else.
By mid afternoon, with a solid days walking behind her, she sees Moon Rock, a giant quartz cut into a small rise of earth. There is trampled earth beneath and she just knows that this is the place where the wolves have their meetings. She decides to stop there and set up camp, as risky as that may be.
As night approaches and the moon starts it's journey across the sky, she starts to grow impatient.
"Where are you?" she whispers to the night. She hears the hoot of an owl in the distance, then nothing but her own heart beating. Scarlet takes a deep breath, looks at the moon, which is full and beautiful and howls to him. "Please come," she pleads to the leader inside her mind.
She waits and has almost given in when then there is howling from all around her. Eerie silence follows and then, He is in front of her staring her into her eyes.
He gestures to her questioningly “Have you brought meat?”
Scarlet rummages through her bag and finds the leg of mutton she had stolen from the kitchen the night before. The wolf drags it away and quickly devours it. Licking his muzzle and his paws he approaches the girl. She holds her hand out to him, unsure of what he wants. The wolf rubs his nose against her open palm.
